Successful graduates are able to pursue State Licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), or School Counselors. The opportunity to be licensed as a Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in the state of Texas can be incorporated in an elective concentration. Counselor Education at Ohio State is one of the top counseling degree programs in the nation. Programs at the Master’s level include professional school counseling and clinical mental health counseling; and at the PhD level, students are trained in counselor education and supervision. Early in their degree path or often while pursuing courses in Counseling methods, students are immersed in clinical work.

The School Counseling program meets the academic and internship requirements for licensure as a school counselor in the State of Mississippi. Upon graduation students are eligible to sit for the national PRAXIS examination in school counseling and to apply to the State for licensure as a school counselor. Our Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is a 60 credit-hour CACREP accredited program that prepares graduates for licensure in Vermont as clinical mental health counselors, with additional post-degree requirements.
Academic Resources
Students must complete their practicum and internship in a clinical mental health setting. Students learn through didactic experiences, small-group projects, and applied learning at community- or school-based sites. Toward the end of the program, students sit for the PRAXIS School Counselor Exam (5422). Students can choose from a variety of testing sites both in and out of Pennsylvania.
What is the difference between a counselor and a counseling psychologist?
Through use of different approaches, therapies, and skills many different counselors treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Counselors will also often work with other mental health professionals and community resources to ensure that their clients receive holistic care.
Our goal is to make the WFU Counseling Programs accessible to working professionals who desire to complete a master’s degree in counseling but cannot leave work for two years to complete the program on campus. In Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for the period of June, 2018 through June, 2028.
Students will typically be notified that they are being invited to interview in the middle of March, with interviews held during late March or early April. For many of the roles in higher education, neither licensure nor certification is required. We encourage our graduates to pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (see “Licensure” section below for more information). Professional identity is maintained through association with professional organizations such as American Counselor Association, American College Counseling Association, and the American College Personnel Association. We encourage leadership and advocacy in making system-level changes on campuses to promote success for students in today’s schools. As part of this exclusive credential, we continually assess student learning, ensuring that our graduates are prepared for successful careers.
Students and faculty from the UAB Counseling program have been invited to join the students and faculty from other CE programs in a two-week study away experience sponsored by Our Lady of Holy Cross College at Casa Cares in Tuscany, Italy (May 19-June 4, 2016). The institute provides American counselors with the opportunity to learn about the growing profession of counseling in Italy. Participants may be able to earn college credit or continuing education units through the host institution.
Preparation is designed to enable students to deliver counseling services to schools and their extended communities. Students are trained to apply principles of learning, human development, counseling, research, and measurement within the schools in order to serve the educational, personal, social, and career development of culturally different students in schools.
Our Faculty
To open a private practice, you will first need a master’s degree to become licensed as a counselor. An advanced online counseling degree from an accredited institution provides the education you need to apply for a license or certification. Once you are certified by the state board as a licensed professional counselor, you may be able to practice in areas that comply with your license or certification, including opening a private practice. All U.S. states require a master’s degree in counseling to become licensed as a counselor.
